| League of St. Maur - Annual Dinner |
|
THE LEAGUE IS BACK! The League of St. Maur, which was created by the late Fr. Edwin Watson, OSB, is back in action. It is a private club that provides ongoing support to further the mission of Maur Hill-Mount Academy. Any individual or married couple is eligible to join the League of St. Maur and can join the league annually at one of three levels: Platinum ($5,000), Gold ($2,500), or Silver ($1,000). New members are being added weekly to this essential group that is setting the foundation for the ongoing success of MH-MA.
A CHANCE TO HONOR EXCEPTIONAL PEOPLE Every year, the League of St. Maur will honor special people who have significantly impacted Maur Hill Prep, Mount St. Scholastica Academy, or Maur Hill-Mount Academy. This past year, we were proud to honor John '62 and Patty (Purslow) '62 Flynn with the Fr. Edwin Watson Award and Colleen (Conrad) Stork '59 with the Fidelis Award. These three people had a profound impact on numerous students, parents, and faculty of our school over the years.
Coach John Flynn won two state football championships as the head coach at Maur Hill Prep ('79 & '92). He also was a standout athlete (alongside good friend and all-league teammate Mick Haverty '62) and assistant coach for legendary coach Guy Galley before he took over the reigns as head coach. He and Patty have impacted thousands of students over the years. Although he retired several years ago, the championship banners and his lasting influence are still present today at MH-MA.
Colleen Stork and her late husband Ed, sent all of their children through our schools. Ed worked for decades at MHP and was the Headmaster for several years. Colleen has been an active Mount St. Scholastica Academy alumna since her graduation and was one of the most loved nurses at Atchison hospital for over 20 years. Recently, she made a donation to the school honoring her husband's legacy with a new light pole that illuminates the front of the school. She remains involved at St. Joseph's parish, can be seen around campus from time to time, and still lives in the familiar "Stork Acres" home down the street from the school.
A SPECIAL INVITATION FOR YOU The League of St. Maur dinner is a private event held annually for League members and their guests. However, this year we would like to open the doors and invite anyone who would like to honor our award recipients to attend. It will be a special night that we will always remember. We sincerely hope you will join us.

A letter to the 2011 attendees: First, this is the official “re-start” of the League of St. Maur. The late Fr. Edwin Watson, OSB founded the League in 1965. Although it was discontinued over a decade ago, we are bringing it back and membership is now open. Already, over two dozen people have joined the League in support of Maur Hill-Mount Academy. On this night, we want to recognize each of these individuals for their commitment to furthering the mission of MH-MA. Of course, there is still room for more. If you haven’t pledged to become a member, please consider joining us. Information will be available at the dinner.
During the evening, there will be both silent and live auctions. The silent auction will take place throughout the cocktail hour and close during dinner. Some of the items include: a foursome at the National Golf Club; an autographed basketball by KU coach, Bill Self and Hall of Fame coach, Bob Hurley; ticket packages for a KU basketball game; a private, stocked-lake fishing trip with cabin accommodations; KC Chiefs football tickets and more. A live auction, hosted by the Nigro Brothers, will include a week’s stay at a condo in Breckenridge, Colorado; a progressive party for 8, which includes St. Benedict’s Abbey, St. Scholastica Monastery, the home of Benedictine College president Stephen Minnis, and my home; and an exclusive deer hunting trip on over 1,000 acres of private land.
You are also invited to join us for Mass (which fulfills your Sunday obligation) at the hotel at 5PM on Saturday. Abbot Barnabas Senecal, OSB will be the main celebrant.
The cocktail hour will feature free wine-tasting, music and more. If you would like to stay at the hotel, special rates are available for our event. You may contact the hotel directly to make your reservation.
If you have any questions or have any special needs for the evening, please contact us at the MH-MA office, 913-367-5482. Thank you again for being part of this special night.
God bless,
Phil Baniewicz President |
